Michael Hultquist: Off Track

Michael Hultquist’s novel Off Track is available at Lilley Press.

Excerpt from book:

“What kind of cowboy do you want to be?

Gary thrust Butchy into his back pocket. He couldn’t see through the puffed bruise of his right eye, but he felt it all the same. He carried the dead weight of the gun with him and inched down the stairs, step by step, following his mother’s terrified screams. Her strained voice echoed off the walls and bled through the pores of the house. For years those screams defined the house. They oozed at every moment, even through the silence. It seeped into Gary’s ears.

His thoughts, in those moments, weren’t his own. The world wasn’t real to him anymore. The air felt strange, as if swirling around him like a giant whirlpool, floating him toward some inevitable force intending to smash him to bits. Then it rushed him head on.

At the bottom of the stairs, he stumbled to the entrance of the kitchen and poked his head around. His mother leaned on her knees before his father, her hands clamped onto his pants leg for support. She pleaded with him, crying like Gary had never seen her before, molten tears pouring through her eyes and streaming down her raw face. His father struck her hard across the cheek and the slap echoed against the walls like a hand on wet concrete.

Gary fingered the gun and lifted it slowly.”

About Michael Hultquist:

Michael Hultquist a screenwriter and author of mostly dark fiction, horror, and thrillers, though he does throw in the occasional comedy to throw everyone off the trail.

His script, VICTIM, has been produced by Pierce Williams Entertainment, and is making the festival route in search of a distributor. He’s also completed several other scripts for them, all of which are in various stages of limbo. Two more have been opted for in the last few months.

Michael has a thing for cornfields and trains, having something to do with how and where he grew up. You’ll notice the imagery in his fiction. In his most recent novels, the main character in HUFFER likes to hang out in the cornfield huffing paint, and OFF TRACK actively incorporates a train and train tracks as a metaphor.

In addition to his scripts, Michael also has another novel, RISEN, available through The Fiction Works, and HUFFER, which is waiting on a release date from Graveside Tales. Michael also have several story and poetry publication credits.

He is an active member of the Horror Writers Association.

Choices in E-book readers

In PCW’s article Budget E-Book Reader Debuts they announce the forthcoming Cool-er Reader, which will cost over a hundred dollars less than the Kindle.

Maybe money is tight, and that’s part of the attraction for E-books. But that doesn’t mean that you have to miss out on the latest technologies. There’s always a deal to be found, if you look hard enough.

Lilley Press books are available in E-book format. They’re easy to download and read right from your computer. And many of the readers coming out on the market, plus iPhone/iPod Touch apps will read E-books also.

Check out these E-books now from Lilley Press!

Join Us for Twittering Fun

I’ve known about the #writechat discussions on Sundays, but never really joined in them until Lilley Press hired me.  If I’m to reach out to the market, I need to know what writers are facing and build a good network.  Besides, I write also, and making new friends in Twitter has been very valuable for me.

Twitter is fun.  It’s a place you can get into to and just be yourself, talk personal or talk about your work or your faith or world news.  There’s a place for everything.  Somewhere a group of people will be chatting about something you want to chat about too.

For writers, I strongly suggest getting in on the #writechat discussion every Sunday afternoon.

To do this, you need to make yourself a Twitter account.  Then you can get in on the chat by a few different methods.  One way is to use the search bar on your profile page (in right sidebar) and put in #writechat.  I use Tweetchat.com though and like it a lot better.  Once you sign in to Tweetchat with your Twitter username and password, just put in writechat for the room and hit enter.

When you make your Twitter account, be sure to follow WritingSpirit.  She’s the founder of #writechat and regular host.  Markdavidgerson is another person to follow.  He was a guest host for this week’s #writechat.

And of course, friend me at lilleypress.  I’m there on Sunday afternoons, barring any scheduled life events.
